Pressure Washer Safety Australia: Workplace Cleaning Checks

|NeoClean Team

Pressure washer safety in Australia starts with the actual work, site conditions and equipment configuration.

Before cleaning begins, identify the surface and contamination, isolate hazards, control people and hose routes, confirm water and power arrangements, and establish where runoff will go. This guide provides practical planning checks; it does not replace current work health and safety duties, site procedures, product instructions or competent professional advice.

Define the task before selecting equipment

Describe the job in specific terms: what is being cleaned, what material is being removed, what finish is required and what method is currently approved. A pressure washer used on an external hardstand presents different controls from one used near electrical equipment, vehicles, production areas or members of the public.

Record the normal work sequence rather than an ideal demonstration. Include preparation, chemical application if any, pressure washing, rinsing, inspection and clean-down. Identify activities that must stop before water is introduced, including vehicle movement, maintenance work, electrical operations or access by unprotected people.

Complete a site risk and isolation check

Before connecting the machine, walk the work area with the responsible person. Identify electrical equipment, moving plant, overhead services, fragile surfaces, openings, slippery areas, traffic routes and people who may enter the zone. Put controls in place before the operator starts.

Where cleaning involves machinery, vehicles or process equipment, confirm the required isolation and immobilisation procedure. Do not rely on the pressure washer operator to decide that a machine is safe to approach. The person responsible for the equipment or site control must confirm the isolation boundary.

Safety area Record before work Stop condition
People Exclusion zone, access control and operator position Unprotected people can enter the spray area
Equipment Isolation status and sensitive components Isolation is incomplete or uncertain
Water and power Supply points, hose route and electrical controls Connections, protection or supply are unsuitable
Runoff Drainage, containment and disposal route Wash water cannot be controlled

Control the spray, hose and work position

High-pressure water can injure people, damage surfaces and force contamination into areas that were not intended to be wet. Position the operator so that the gun can be controlled without twisting, climbing or standing on an unstable surface. Keep both hands available where the equipment instructions require them.

Route the hose away from sharp edges, hot surfaces, vehicle wheels, stairs and pedestrian paths. Use barriers, a spotter or another approved control where the route cannot be kept clear. Do not leave a pressurised hose unattended or allow the gun to point toward a person while the operator changes position.

Check the machine and accessories before use

Inspect the machine, electrical lead, water inlet, high-pressure hose, gun, lance, nozzle, couplings and guards. Look for cuts, abrasion, bulges, exposed reinforcement, damaged seals, blocked nozzles, loose fittings and missing identification. Confirm that the fitted parts belong to the machine configuration and are suitable for the intended task.

The NeoClean GATLING GAT12 product page lists model-specific parameters for that machine. Those values do not replace the operating instructions or confirm that every accessory is compatible. For current accessory information, review the pressure washer guns and nozzles collection.

Never use tape, clamps or improvised repairs on a high-pressure hose. Isolate and depressurise the system before inspecting or changing a fitting, nozzle or accessory. Refer electrical, pump and pressure-control faults to competent service personnel.

Plan water, power and drainage together

The cleaning setup must have an approved water source, a suitable electrical arrangement and a controlled wastewater route. Confirm where the machine will be positioned, how far the hose must travel, which connection points are authorised and who controls the drain or containment arrangement.

Do not assume that a floor drain, stormwater inlet or open ground is an acceptable destination for wash water. The water may contain soil, oil, detergent or other contaminants. Follow the site procedure and applicable local requirements before work starts. If runoff cannot be contained or directed as required, stop and revise the method.

Use PPE selected for the task

PPE should follow the risk assessment, equipment instructions and chemical information. Depending on the task, controls may include suitable eye and face protection, hearing protection, gloves, protective clothing and safety footwear. PPE does not replace exclusion zones, isolation, guarding, safe hose routing or correct equipment selection.

When chemicals are used, read the label and safety data sheet and confirm the required handling, dilution, storage and emergency arrangements. Do not assume that a foam cannon or detergent injector is suitable for every chemical.

Know the stop-work conditions

  • A person enters the exclusion zone.
  • Isolation is incomplete or cannot be verified.
  • The hose, gun, lance, fitting or nozzle is damaged.
  • The machine leaks, pulses unexpectedly, overheats or behaves abnormally.
  • Electrical protection, water supply or drainage is unsuitable.
  • The surface, chemical or contamination is outside the approved procedure.
  • Runoff, spray or aerosols cannot be controlled.

Stop the work, make the area safe and report the condition to the responsible person. Do not increase pressure, change a nozzle or add chemical merely to overcome an unexplained result.

Close down and hand over the equipment

After cleaning, follow the instructions for releasing pressure, shutting off water, flushing chemical equipment, draining or protecting the machine and storing the hose and accessories. Inspect the equipment again and record any fault that appeared during use.

The handover should identify the machine, fitted accessories, task completed, defects found, controls that remain in place and the person responsible for the next action. For configuration questions, contact NeoClean with the model, accessory details and fault record.

Frequently asked questions

Is a pressure washer automatically safe if the operator wears PPE?

No. PPE is one control. Safe work also requires task planning, isolation, exclusion, hose management, equipment inspection and runoff control.

Can pressure washing be used near electrical equipment?

Only where the equipment, isolation method, work procedure and responsible person permit it. Do not direct water toward live or unprotected electrical components.

What should be checked before starting a wash-down job?

Check the task, people, isolation, machine, accessories, water and power supplies, hose route, drainage and required PPE.
