Dry ice blasting for food manufacturing should be treated as a site-specific cleaning proposal, not as an automatic food-safety solution. Food businesses must follow their approved food-safety system, cleaning procedure, hygiene rules and local regulatory requirements. A dry process may change the amount of water or chemical used in a task, but it does not by itself prove that a surface is clean, sanitary or ready for production.

Start with the food-safety owner and the maintenance owner together. Define the zone, equipment, contamination, required result, shutdown window, verification method and release authority before selecting a machine or accessory.

Separate zones before discussing equipment

Map the proposed work against the plant layout. A non-product maintenance area, external frame, motor housing, conveyor support and food-contact surface can have different controls. High-care, low-care, raw-product, ready-to-eat, packaging and allergen areas may also have different access and cleaning requirements. Do not allow a general equipment recommendation to override the plant's zoning rules.

Record whether food, ingredients, packaging, utensils or open product will be present. Define what must be removed, covered, isolated or cleaned again before the work begins. Include drains, overhead surfaces, hollow frames, guards, cable routes and nearby equipment where loosened material could travel. The work boundary should be visible to operators and contractors.

Define the contamination and the acceptance result

Describe the material to be removed: dry food residue, fat, grease, carbon, adhesive, flour-like dust, old coating, rust product or another deposit. Note whether allergens, pathogenic materials, chemicals, lubricants or unknown substances may be present. A visible deposit can have a different hygiene significance from a maintenance residue, so the food-safety team should define the assessment and handling process.

Write the acceptance result in measurable site language. It may involve visual inspection, a documented cleaning record, a swab or another approved verification method. Do not substitute a clean-looking surface for the plant's required verification. Cleaning removes soil; sanitising is a separate control where required by the food-safety system. The responsible team should specify the next step and the release criteria.

Review dry ice, air and carbon dioxide controls

Dry ice blasting uses compressed air to carry dry ice particles to a surface. Check the exact machine, nozzle, hose, fittings and air source for the proposed setup. The air quality and compressor arrangement should suit the task and the equipment instructions. If compressed air could contact a food-contact surface or enter product equipment, the plant should define the applicable air-quality requirement and verification approach.

Plan ventilation and occupancy. Dry ice changes to carbon dioxide, while the blast can dislodge dust, grease and other material. Assess the room, pits, vessels, low points, enclosed equipment and adjacent areas. Decide whether monitoring, extraction, barriers, access control or a different location is required. A food plant may need to coordinate the work with production ventilation, refrigeration, confined-space controls and emergency arrangements.

Protect the hygiene status of the area. Operators should follow the plant's clothing, hand hygiene, tool segregation, traffic and entry requirements. PPE for noise, eye and face exposure, hands, feet and clothing should be selected from the task risk assessment. PPE does not replace product protection, zoning, ventilation or cleaning verification.

Control the shutdown and the trial

Schedule the work in an approved maintenance window. Isolate the equipment under the plant's energy-control process and confirm that stored energy, movement, heat and pressure have been addressed. Protect or remove product and packaging, and establish how the contractor's machine, hoses, tools and clothing will enter the area.

Use a small, representative test only after the food-safety and maintenance teams agree to it. Record the starting condition, equipment and machine configuration, air supply, nozzle, operating method, test location and result. Track where the removed material went. Inspect adjacent surfaces, openings, bearings, guards, sensors, seals and hollow sections, not only the test patch.

Stop when the substrate, coating, contamination or hygiene status is uncertain. Also stop if debris enters a protected space, ventilation is inadequate, the air source is unsuitable, a component moves, a seal is affected or the agreed test result is not achieved. The next decision belongs to the responsible plant team.

Plan post-cleaning verification

Agree who will inspect the equipment and who may release the zone. The post-cleaning plan may include removal of loose debris, approved washing or sanitising, drying, tool removal, visual inspection and a documented verification step. The sequence depends on the plant's procedure and the surface being cleaned.

Keep cleaning records tied to the equipment and shutdown. Record the contamination, method, date, operators, test findings, exceptions, corrective actions and release decision. If the method is approved for one component, do not silently extend it to another line, product zone or surface with a different risk profile.
